CHICOPEE — Western Massachusetts has a Mercedes Benz dealership again, and owners Peter and Michelle Wirth held a grand opening celebration that literally included the red carpet treatment.

Guests invited to the grand opening of Mercedes Benz of Springfield were made to feel like they were attending a movie premiere with dramatic lighting, a logo backdrop for photos, and literally a red carpet.

Unique hors d’oeuvres featuring flavors of western Massachusetts and music by the Community School of Springfield were other highlights. An estimated 300 guests attended the reception.

“We wanted to spoil our guests and celebrate,” Michelle Wirth said.

Located off Exit 6 of the Massachusetts Turnpike, the 37,000 square foot facility is the western Massachusetts’ first new dealership in some 20 years, and the area’s first Mercedes Benz dealer in a decade.

“A lot has changed in 10 years,” Michelle Wirth said.

With the exception of two employees who moved from New York, the workforce is made up entirely of local workers. The dealership is continuing to hire new people.

With assistance from elected officials in Chicopee, the new dealership took three years to plan and construct. It intends to serve western Massachusetts, southern Vermont and New Hampshire and northern Connecticut, the Wirths said.

Mercedes Benz of Springfield has already sponsored a number of events in western Massachusetts including local golf outings and chamber of commerce events.
